I’m saddened when we overlook the profound gifts we possess as humans—a few being the ability to experience the world through our five senses. Many of us are focused either on over indulging and perverting the senses or going to the opposite extreme and vilifying sensory experience in an effort to be spiritual. I live in the balance, in the Sacred Senses.
Each sense is a gateway to a rich tapestry of experiences, and when our intention is pure they connect us with the beauty and sacredness of existence. Join me on a journey of exploration, inviting you to rekindle your connection with your senses and discover the divine within the ordinary.
Sight: The Canvas of Creation
Gaze upon a world painted with vibrant hues, where every sunrise and sunset is a masterpiece in motion. The sense of sight allows us to witness nature's ever-changing scenery, from the delicate unfurling of a flower's petals into sacred geometry, to the majesty of towering mountains that make us feel safe and protected. Through our eyes, we connect with the awe-inspiring creation that surrounds us, reminding us of the vastness and wonder of the universe. And we create our own inspirations into art to share visual expression of ourselves with others.
Hearing: The Melody of Being
I’ve heard it said that “music and math are the language of God.” Close your eyes and listen—a symphony of sounds unfold. From the soothing cadence of raindrops to the cheerful chirping of birds, the world is alive with its own music. The sense of hearing invites us to attune ourselves to the rhythms of life, to appreciate the harmony of laughter, and to find solace in the gentle whispers of the wind. Through our ears, we receive the gift of connection, bridging the gap between the note or song we are, and the symphony sounding all around us. At any moment we choose to be in resonance or in dissonance with our environment.
Touch: The Language of Connection
Reach out and touch the world around you—textures, temperatures, and sensations come alive through our skin. The sense of touch is a conduit for connection, allowing us to feel the comfort of a loved one's hand on our shoulder, the refreshing coolness of water on a hot day, and the give of sand beneath our feet. Through touch, we experience the tangible presence of life, a reminder that our physicality is intertwined with the sacred dance of existence.
Taste: A Journey of Savoring
Take a moment to savor the flavors that dance on your tongue—a medley of sensations that nourish both body and spirit. My friends and family tease me because I deeply enjoy food. I will out Mmmmmmm the best of food lovers. I was recently asked about my favorite food and I answered, “ that’s like asking me to pick a favorite child. “ Food is an adventure to me, I want to be surprised, I want variety, and layers. The sense of taste is a portal to cultures, memories, and traditions, allowing us to explore the world one bite at a time. With each meal, we engage in a ritual of gratitude, honoring the abundance of nature and the interconnectedness of all living beings.
Smell: Fragrance of Presence
Inhale deeply and let the scents of the world envelop you—a bouquet of memories and emotions carried on the breeze. The sense of smell awakens our primal instincts, guiding us to safety, igniting nostalgia, and evoking powerful emotions. Whether it's the earthy scent of rain-soaked soil or the sweet fragrance of blooming flowers, each smell is a reminder that we are part of a greater cosmic dance.
Our senses, like intricate threads woven into the fabric of our existence, connect us to the sacredness of life itself. The words of comfort I offer when a loved one passes on are: “May your memories comfort you.” Our memories consist of sights, sounds, touch, taste, and scent. Taking a moment to fully engage with our senses becomes an act of reverence. Through our senses , we are invited to immerse ourselves in the divine tapestry that surrounds us. By embracing the sacredness of our senses, we open ourselves to a deeper connection with the universe and a profound appreciation for the beauty that exists in every moment. I encourage you to realize, embrace and use your power of creativity to cultivate the memories with which your loved ones will honor you.
